American Bex Porter falls in love with the Prince of Wales while studying at Oxford.
Rebecca "Bex" Porter never believed in fairy tales. Her twin sister Lacey is the dreamer, while Bex is more of an adventurer. Her wanderlust leads her to leave Iowa for Oxford.
Upon arrival in the UK, Bex meets the dreamy Nick, AKA Prince Nicholas Alexander Arthur Edward of Wales. She finds herself at the center of the British tabloids and dealing with royals who are reluctant to acknowledge her relationship with the future king. Then her twin starts seeing Nick's younger brother Freddie...
Nick and Bex have ups and downs in their relationship, but the reader knows from the beginning that it will all work out. The book begins the night before Bex's royal wedding as she's looking back on her relationship with Nick from its inception to the present-day.
Going through the entirety of the royal couple's relationship makes the book seem overlong. Nick and Bex navigate family issues, loss, and the stress of planning a royal wedding.
Even though this book is very loosely based on Will and Kate, the royals in this novel are not the Windsors. This royal family is from the Lyons dynasty. Historical rulers like Queen Victoria, William the Conqueror, and Queen Elizabeth I exist, but there are rulers not present in our world like Queen Victoria II, King Richard IV, and the current ruler, Queen Eleanor. Eleanor is based on Queen Elizabeth II, as she is a long-ruling queen with a prince consort and two male grandchildren (Nick and Freddie) who are based on William and Harry. The princes' mother is absent because of mental disability instead of being tragically killed. Bex is a combination of Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, being a commoner who met the prince at school and an American.
Christine Lakin perfectly captures the characters' sarcasm and humor in her narration. She switches between British and American accents flawlessly.
Recommended for readers who are obsessed with the royal family.
