Antiracist Baby

A picture book that lists the steps for raising an antiracist baby.

I've never listened to a picture book in audiobook format before, and while the pictures aren't needed to tell the story they do add to it. I found I missed them and wished the audio came with a PDF of the images.

This book may not make sense to children, although it will expose them to antiracism from a young age. The book reads more like guidelines for parents who want to raise children that aren't racist. The afterword, which is longer than the book itself, talks to parents about conversations to have with their children about racism and the differences they observe in the world around them.

The content of the book is good, but I wish it focused more on antiracism from a child's perspective. Instead of telling the parents to ask questions in the afterword, the book should have presented these questions to the child directly.

Dr. Ibram X. Kendi is one of the world's leading advocates for antiracism. His other works include How to Be an Antiracist and Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America. Kendi earned his doctorate from Temple University in African American Studies. He is a Queens native who now lives in Boston.
